Department SummaryThe Science Education Program at San José State University invites applications for a part-time lecturer position as a university supervisor to support preservice science teacher development. The Science Education Program is well positioned to meet the increasing demand for well-qualified and prepared science teachers in our community.The program is led by an interdisciplinary team of dedicated teacher-scholars recognized for their commitment to the preparation and ongoing support of justice-centered, socially responsive secondary science teachers. Our faculty work on the transformation of undergraduate science courses and student learning experiences, and they engage in innovative science education research uniting the College of Science with the Lurie College of Education. Science Education offers a Master of Science degree in Science Education that can be done separately or in conjunction with the teaching credential.Required QualificationsA master's degree in any science or science education area or education focused field is required. We also require applicants to hold a valid teaching credential (California clear credential or another state's equivalent) and have 5 or more years of teaching experience. Applicants must be knowledgeable of the Next Generation Science Standards and active-based teaching practices. They should have the ability to teach and evaluate adult learners.ResponsibilitiesSupervisors support preservice teacher development primarily through observation, debriefs, formative and summative assessments and seminars. They play a critical role in coaching and evaluating teacher candidates, supporting mentor teachers in the field, and providing feedback to the Science Education Program and the Teacher Education Department. The work settings include middle and high school sites in the Bay area, online/hybrid settings and SJSU. The successful candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.Technical Skills:Technology is an integral part of supervision at SJSU. Here is a brief list of the kinds of technology use that is typical in a given semester: Zoom video conferencing, the Google suite of applications (e.g. docs, slides), Canvas Learning Management System, video and integrated annotation and feedback tools.Conditional AppointmentPlease be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association.
